U-NEWS Privacy Policy
Effective date: 15 September 2026
Last updated: 15 September 2026
1. About This Policy
Univerza Co., Ltd. (“the Company,” “we,” or “us”) owns and publishes U-NEWS and acts as the data controller for processing activities whose purposes and means it determines.
This policy explains how we handle personal data when you use U-NEWS and its related services, including customer support. It is not limited to visits to our corporate website.
The data associated with you depends on the features you use, the information you provide, and your settings. Some information may be associated with your device even if you have not created an account.
2. Personal Data We Collect
2.1 Account and Profile Information
When you register, verify your identity, or update your profile, we may collect:
Your telephone number and information relating to identity verification
Your display name, email address, biography, and profile image that you provide
Account identifiers and information linking your account to a device
Referral information when you use that feature
Records of policy acknowledgement and relevant consent
2.2 Device and Connection Information
We collect information used to provide and maintain the service, such as device or installation identifiers, platform, app version, language, access times, and notification delivery tokens.
Service infrastructure may record connection information, such as IP addresses, request times, and errors, for security and troubleshooting.
2.3 Interests and Usage Information
We collect your selected categories, saved articles, settings, and news-related activities, such as opening articles, liking content, or commenting, depending on the features you use.
This information may be associated with your account or device to tailor news to your interests, remember activity, and display participation statistics or scores where those services are available.
2.4 Today Information
When you use Today, we may store your selected city or area, time zone, currency, favourites, and widget preferences to display relevant information.
If you use a feature requiring birth information, we may collect the date, time, and time zone of birth that you provide for that feature. Selecting a city manually does not grant the app permission to access your device’s location.
2.5 Membership and Purchase Information
If you purchase a membership, we collect information needed to verify and manage your access, such as your membership plan, payment status, transaction identifiers, receipt references, and access start, renewal, or expiry dates.
For App Store purchases, Apple processes the payment. The Company receives transaction information needed to provide membership services, rather than full payment card numbers from Apple through that purchase process.
2.6 Information You Send Us
When you contact support, report an issue, submit a personal data request, or contribute content through app features, we may collect the messages, images, and supporting information you provide.
Please share only necessary information and avoid sending passwords, one-time passwords, or unrelated personal information about other people.
3. Sources of Information
We receive information:
Directly from you, including profile details, settings, and messages
Through your use of the app and service infrastructure, including reading activity and device information
From relevant service providers, such as transaction verification information from the App Store
From other users where they refer to you, use referral features, or report content involving you
4. Purposes and Legal Bases
We process personal data for the following purposes, using the appropriate legal basis for each activity:
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Managing accounts, verifying identity, and providing requested services | Performance of a contract or steps taken at your request before entering into a contract |
| Remembering preferences, tailoring news to selected categories, and providing Today features | Performance of a contract for requested features, or consent where required |
| Verifying purchases and managing membership access | Performance of a contract and applicable legal obligations |
| Maintaining security, preventing misuse, and investigating issues | Legitimate interests, taking your rights and freedoms into account |
| Responding to enquiries and requests | Performance of a contract, legitimate interests, or legal obligations, depending on the request |
| Processing requiring consent, such as marketing communications if offered | Consent |
Acknowledging this policy does not provide blanket consent for every purpose. Where consent is required, we will request it separately as appropriate.
If you do not provide information needed for a particular feature, we may be unable to provide that feature. We will explain the required information and consequences in the relevant context.
5. Disclosure of Information
We may disclose information as necessary to:
Infrastructure, database, and file storage providers
Identity verification, messaging, and notification providers
Payment providers or app distribution platforms for transaction verification
Information or processing providers needed for the features you use
Advisers or competent authorities where necessary to comply with law or establish, exercise, or defend legal claims
Provider details for the released version:
[Identify providers, their functions, data received, processing countries, and relevant privacy policy links.]
If you publish comments or content in areas visible to other users, information displayed with that content may be accessible to those users according to the feature’s design.
Connecting services or belonging to the same corporate group does not mean that all your data is automatically shared. We will identify the purpose and appropriate legal basis for each sharing activity.
6. Artificial Intelligence
U-NEWS uses artificial intelligence to process certain content, including summarising, rewriting, or translating news.
Using AI for news content does not mean that all your account information or personal data is sent to AI providers.
Details of user data and AI processing:
[Identify features that send user messages or data to AI providers, the providers involved, the data sent, purposes, retention periods, and model-training terms; or confirm that no user data is sent in the released version.]
Where a feature involves sharing personal data with an AI provider, we will explain the details and obtain permission as required before doing so.
7. International Processing
Your information may be processed outside Thailand when we use providers with systems or personnel in other countries.
We will assess the basis for those transfers and implement appropriate safeguards under applicable law.
Relevant countries and safeguards:
[Identify countries or regions and the safeguards or transfer mechanisms applicable to the actual providers.]
8. Data Retention
We retain information for periods necessary to provide services, meet legal obligations, and handle disputes, according to the following schedule:
| Data category | Retention period |
|---|---|
| Account and profile information | [Specify retention during use and after account closure.] |
| Interests, usage history, and Today preferences | [Specify period.] |
| System and security logs | [Specify period.] |
| Transactions and membership records | [Specify period and relevant requirements.] |
| Support communications and rights requests | [Specify period.] |
| Backups | [Specify deletion or overwrite cycle.] |
At the end of the applicable period, we will delete, destroy, or anonymise the data unless further retention is permitted by law. Removal from primary systems and backups may finish at different times according to the stated schedules.
9. Your Rights and Choices
Subject to applicable legal conditions, you may have the right to:
Access or obtain a copy of your data
Correct inaccurate data
Request deletion, destruction, or anonymisation
Restrict or object to processing
Receive or transfer data where the law provides
Withdraw consent for processing based on consent
Lodge a complaint with Thailand’s Office of the Personal Data Protection Committee
Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before consent was withdrawn. Features requiring the relevant data may no longer be available.
You can manage device permissions, including notifications and photo access, through your device settings.
10. Account and Data Deletion
You can initiate an account deletion request through the app’s account deletion feature, or contact us using the details below for assistance or other data requests.
We may verify your identity proportionately before acting. Where information must be retained, we will explain the relevant reason.
Uninstalling the app does not delete your account or data from our systems. Account deletion does not cancel a subscription managed through the App Store; please also manage renewal through your Apple account.
11. Information Security
We maintain technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risks to protect information against unauthorised access, use, alteration, or disclosure.
Please keep your device and authentication information secure and contact us if you suspect unauthorised use of your account.
12. Minors
Service age requirements: [Specify the minimum age and conditions applicable to minors.]
Where processing a minor’s data requires consent from a person with parental responsibility, we will follow the applicable requirements. Parents or guardians with concerns about a minor’s data may contact us.
13. Policy Changes
We may update this policy when our services or data practices change and will revise the last-updated date. For material changes, we will provide an appropriate notice and obtain fresh consent where required.
